Little Europe and the Atomium

Image
There is an amusement park type place in Brussels that has all of these miniature landmarks from all over Europe. It was huge and it was interesting and fun to play around and learn about all of the European countries. We were able to listen to each national anthem and tried our hand at guessing what the landmarks were and from what country they were. I have to say though... NOTHING beats the national anthem of the good ole United States of America! "Look kids, there's Big Ben!" This is a Finnish castle. I can't remember what country this castle was from, but I thought it was pretty cool looking! Dad taking pics in little Europe. The Atomium from below it. It was built for the World Fair in 1958. It was supposed to only remain on display for 6 months, but it was so popular they chose to keep it as a tourist attraction. You can go up in it and look at several displays that I think pertain mostly to science. There's even a section were kids can join some kind

Since most people in Brussels walk, ride the train and ride bikes, they have these bike rentals - from what I understand you can pay per month and you get a card that you swipe on the bike rack and take the bike - they have racks all over the place for you park them in. It seems like a pretty great service for people who don't want to drive or who don't want to store their own bike. No one knows exactly what the deal is with the peeing boy - you can look it up - no one in Belgium even knows what the deal is. However, people flock to see him and he has dozens of outfits that they dress him in for certain celebrations. He's been there since the year 1388. There are lots of street performers around the city it seems - we came upon this guy and had no idea that he was a real person until he grabbed Bryan and put sat him on his lap to take a pic. As legend would have it... if you rub the length of this statue, you will return to Belgium. Bryan and I tested out - time will te

Here we are at the Grand Plaza

And here is the Grand Plaza - some of the shots are of the plaza and the gorgeous buildings with the crowds in the square. Other shots are close ups of the architecture. The stunning detail in all of the buildings is just amazing - to be surrounded on a daily basis by all of that history... I mean, the history is even in the structures themselves. It's very cool!

On our way...

to the Grand Plaza. Grammy and Bryan walking down the street. and yes... we went all the way to Europe to eat at Subway!! LOL ! Across the street from Subway there was a little art festival. Lots of tents with handmade trinkets for sale - whistles, toys, bags, head bands, candles and a lot more. We bought the boys a couple of bird whistles and wooden toy swords. I also bought a couple of head bands since my hair was exactly the perfect length for getting in my face without being able to actually tie it back. This lady was a street performer getting her outfit and makeup on. I'm not sure what her act was, but my parents thought that she may have been getting ready to be a "living statue". I just thought it was funny that she showed up in pants and a t-shirt and changed right there in the street. And this clock is just neat. I have no idea what building it's on or if there is any significance to it. It was in the middle of an area that had a lot of construction going
